These devices will be available to the public in the coming months thanks to the District Grant and matching donation from the club. The 2017-18 Rotary International theme, “Making a Difference”, was introduced and Fitzsimmons commented, “We make a difference every year for the graduates of our schools through our annual golf tournament, and for youth of families in tough financial situations through our auction and Children’s Christmas Party. We volunteer at Champ House, some of us run races, and some deliver food for meals on wheels or volunteer at the Food Pantry or at a town clean up. Some of us may do different things, but all of us DO GOOD, and doing well for our community, both locally and globally, is making a difference.” Fitzsimmons also announced that with the help of Ann Knell, the Principal at Mattacheese Middle School, the Rotary Club of Yarmouth will introduce the first EarlyAct program for middle schoolers this coming fall. Rising StarRising Star: Jessica Holbrook, D-Y Regional High School Josh Clarkin, of the D-Y Guidance Department, called upon the enthusiasms of his professional experience to illuminate the plethora of reasons why Jessica Holbrook is a Rising Star. Starting with the profile of her academic prowess (GPA of 3.69 and 12th in her class of 179), Josh outlined examples of Jessica’s “meeting challenges, high intellect, and work ethic.” An observer would note that she has to be an outstanding time manager: holding down two jobs, has a black belt in Tai Kwando, is president of the National Honor Society, Student Ambassador, secretary of her Class of 2017, president of the Art Club, member of the National Art Society, and winner of the Regis College Book Award. She not only is a student who does these things well, but Jesse does them with “passion and purpose,” pushing herself to grow in all aspects of life. While holding herself to high expectations, she exhibits an empathetic approach to everyone else. Her career plans for becoming a Nurse are well on their way with a full scholarship to UMass Boston’s Nursing Program. Jessica, in response to her introduction, said there was “nothing left to say.” She then proceeded to laud credit to Mom, other parents, D-Y’s opportunities, clubs and volunteers, the Class of 2007, teachers, the School to Careers Program, and interning at the Cape Cod Hospital. “It will be quite difficult to leave.” ![]() |

The Maktha Campus School Inauguration (a direct interactive transmission from Hyderabad, India)As a culmination of a year-long mutual effort and partnership among Rotary Clubs, the Navionics Foundation, local India educational leaders, numerous dedicated individuals, and committed financial assistance, the day arrived in the city of Hyderabad, India, to celebrate the renovation of the Maktha School and the completion of Phase 1 construction. With the assistance of a computer-based Skype hookup, both the Rotary Clubs of Yarmouth, MA, and of Greater Hyderabad, India, could simultaneously participate in a single Rotary meeting (although it was late afternoon at that location in India). President Mike and his counterpart in Hyderabad were able to conduct an equally novel and normal Rotary meeting schedule. It should be noted that the remarkable arrangement of computers, projectors, screens, and software that made it all possible were put together by the dexterity and talent of Wayne Hohler, with an able assist from Mike Riley. In a morning filled with drama and significant features, some segments can be highlighted: ● the presence and narration of the Club’s official onsite representative, Tammy Glivinski (who was accompanied by her daughter, Elizabeth); ● the dedication and management of Jackie Carnevali, her husband Giuseppe, and their Navionics Foundation; ● the partnership with the Rotary Club of Greater Hyderabad; ● the contributions from the Bourne-Sandwich Rotary (via Rick Boucher), ● the D-Y Interact Club’s Cultural Awareness Kit (as well as other ongoing activities), plus a donation of $841 presented by Interact President Peter Julian and three officers; ● the work of the Club’s World Community Service Committee (particularly, Bob Wells and Dave Bisbee); ● the photographs from the Inauguration Day activities and Puja ceremony; and ● a hefty and impressive commitment from the members of the Yarmouth Rotary, who, all the while, maintained an inspiring level of local projects such as the Yarmouth Food Pantry.

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide DetectorsAt our regular meeting on Friday August 9th our club presented Yarmouth Fire Department Captain Jon Sawyer with 20 smoke detectors, 10 carbon monoxide detectors and 100 9volt batteries which will be given to needy Yarmouth residents. After an earlier presentation to our club about fire safety it was noted that when the fire department enters houses during calls and inspections, it finds many situations where there are non- working detectors or none at all. Sometimes all that is needed is a battery. Members of our club felt that something needed to be done before a serious accident happened resulting in a serious injury or fatality. Our good works committee voted on spending funds to procure the detectors. Interstate batteries, located on Station Ave., So. Yarmouth donated the batteries. A big thank you to Interstate Batteries. Engineers Without BordersLast week's TGIFIY included a preview introduction of Julie Bliss a junior at WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) and a very active member of the WPI chapter of Engineers Without Borders. This week Mickey Walker introduced Julie, along with three other WPI members of this impressive group: Chris Garceau, Emily Dudley, and Pat Sheppard. The overall organization, Engineers Without Borders-USA, "supportscommunity-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects while fostering responsible leadership." (For more about EWB-USA, check their website: www.ewb-usa.org.) The students' presentation centered on their project in the Guatemala village of Guachthu'uq, where they made an assessment, data gathering, and "listening" trip in the summer of 2010. Of the many problems facing the village families, smoke inhalation (caused by inadequate stoves), a lack of clean water access, and poverty were the greatest and serious threats to their quality of life and to life itself. The WPI chapter response will include their first implementation trip in the summer of 2011 as part of a five year commitment. This responsibility will be a three-level initiative: · implement a pilot project for the stoves, · implement a pilot project for water catchment tanks, · develop a system for micro-financing within the village community. They are also in contact with a local Guatemalan Rotary Club, which is about 40 minutes away. This WPI student chapter has a membership of about 25, and they are in charge of their own fundraising as well. They have their own website: http://users.wpi.edu/~ewbwpi/ and email address: ewb-execs@wpi.edu. All together, they rate a deserving, "well done." These four students not only represented their college and their EWB chapter extremely well, but may have planted a seed of future partnership or support. As Mickey pointed out, it could be an opportunity for the Yarmouth Rotary to link up with another Rotary Club or to participate in an international project as we weigh different options. |
Clarinets & Saxes
The ME Small Elementary School music program is looking to add to it's inventory of instruments available for loan. Our Street Art Festival proceeds are a big part of the funding for this program. Saxophones and clarinets are especially in need, according to Patrick Riley, ME Small Music Director. The Saxophone is the most expensive instrument to rent and families are often asking to "rent" the school instruments. If you have a clarient or sax that is no longer needed or used, please consider donating it to the schools through our affilition with the Band Parents Association. They will provide you with a donation receipt for tax purposes. we will then have the instrument refurbished and placed into inventory. Brass and orchestral instruments are also in need. Keep you eyes open at yard sales for instruments that need a home as well. Please see Tom Tomasik or Mike Riley if you have questions or have an instrument to donate.
|
Yard Sale Treasure
Do you enjoy yard sales? Be on the lookout for used band or orchestra instruments when you are rummaging through the trash and treasures. We can provide the owner a tax receipt for the full donation value (usually much more than the yard sale price) if they are willing to donate the instrument. We will then have it refurbished and put back into use in the Yarmouth Elementary schools music program. If the owners are not interested in the tax receipt, but a reasonable price can be negotiated we will reimburse you for the purchase of the instrument. So set your yard sale sights on musical instruments and everyone wins!

What's In A Shelter Box![]()
Shelter
At the heart of every ShelterBox is a ten-person tent. It is custom made for ShelterBox by Vango, one of the world's leading tent manufacturers, and is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds and heavy rainfall. Internally, each tent has privacy partitions that allow recipients to divide the space as they see fit. A smile Every box contains a children's pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens. For children who have lostmost, if not all, their possessions, these small gifts are treasured. Warmth and protection In addition to the tent, the boxes contain a range of other survival equipment including thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, essential in areas where temperatures plummet at nightfall. Where malaria is prevalent mosquito nets are supplied, as well a life saving means of water purification. Water supplies often become contaminated after a major disaster, as infrastructure and sanitation systems are destroyed, this presents a secondary but no less dangerous threat to survivors than the initial disaster itself. Self sufficiency A basic tool kit containing a hammer, axe, saw, trenching shovel, hoe head, pliers and wire cutters can be found in every box. These items enable people to improve their immediate environment, by chopping firewood or digging a latrine, for example. Then, when it is possible, to start repairing or rebuilding the home they were forced to leave. Fit for purpose Every item is durable, practical and brand new. The box itself is lightweight and waterproof and has been used for a variety of purposes in the past - from water and food storage containers to a cot for a newly born baby. A heart to the home A key piece in every box is either a wood burning or multi-fuel stove - that can burn anything from diesel to old paint. This provides the heart of the new home where water is boiled, food is cooked and families congregate. In addition, there are pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers. Adaptability We keep a broad range of equipment in stock so we can adapt the contents of a box to a specific disaster. For example, following the Javanese earthquake in 2006, when some resources were available locally or could be salvaged fromone storey buildings, the overwhelming need was for shelter – so we just sent tents, packing two in each box. |
Apple(ton) SeedsThought's from our dearly departed past member Dick Appleton: "I've learned that you can tell alot about a man by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights." "I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting new people, and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you." |
Rotary Elevator Speech
So you're getting into an elevator, wearing your Rotary pin like a good Rotarian and the person next to you asks you "What is Rotary?". Remember the elevators here on the Cape are very short so the response has to be brief. Here's a brief synapsis of Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Yarmouth.

What's A "Million Dollar Meal"?
That's a pretty expensive breakfast you have there. Actually a Million Dollar Meal is no meal at all, but a way to give to the Rotary Foundation. The Million Dollar Meal concept was started in 1959 by a club in our district ( Stoughton). It is now an established part of Rotary International fundrasing for The Rotary Foundation.

Children's Holiday Party History
---A little history
In early November of 2000, a carbon monoxide scare forced residence of the West Yarmouth Inn out into the streets. The aftermath was the realization of the number of needy families, with children, residing in the motels along Route 28. A group of Rotarians, Peter Carnes, Bruce Hill, Tom Martin, and Jack MacLelland, constituted a quickly formed committee to organize a Christmas party for these needy families.
